It’s that time again—the hustle and bustle of the holiday season is upon us. As weavers, it is a joy to give our handwoven fiber creations to those we love. But while we may wish for unlimited hours at the loom, we have to be realistic with our plans when it comes to making gifts. Weaving time is precious, and we’ve got to make it count.
With so many beautiful weaving patterns in the Gist library, we know it can be hard to decide what to dedicate your coveted loom real estate to. Here are five of our favorite weaving patterns that are sure to impress any recipient this holiday season.
As the lucky receiver of one of these scarves myself, I speak from experience when I say this is a project so jaw-droppingly beautiful it will leave your recipient speechless. Both scarves are woven on one warp and use just two cones of Ode. You can gift both scarves, or gift one and keep the other. Strikingly beautiful and buttery soft, the Luxury Scarf Duo is a go-to for gifting amongst the Gist team.

You don’t have to be a weaver to appreciate the delightful design of Creamsicle Towels. Using Summer and Winter to depict the elegant over-and-under of Plain Weave, this 8-shaft pattern combines Beam 8/2 and Duet Cotton/Linen blend to make three generously sized, soft, and plump towels. You can spoil someone special by gifting them the full set, or lovingly wrap and disperse them individually.

These coasters are a wonderful project when you need a quick and easy gift. They have a narrow width, can be woven with a single or multi-color design, and are finished on the loom. Four coasters can easily be warped and woven in an afternoon, and you can choose from your stash of Mallo, Beam 3/2, and Duet leftovers.

There’s nothing like a one-cone scarf. The Open Window Scarf is woven in Plain Weave, but uses a pick-up stick to create a pattern with warp and weft floats reminiscent of lace. Simple enough to weave without stress, but still special enough to be presented to your recipient with pride.

Level up your gift wrap game with a handmade touch from our Rustic Ribbons. This is a free pattern, and a great stash-buster if you have partial cones of Duet laying around. We know it’s impossible to weave EVERYONE a gift, but even a store bought gift can still benefit from a sprinkle of handwoven magic.

In a world that feels dedicated to fast-paced consumer culture, it can feel tempting to opt for store-bought gifts of convenience. Yet nothing quite compares to the timeless beauty and thoughtfulness of a handwoven item. We hope you take some time this season to slow down at your loom, and delight in the sweetness of weaving for yourself and your loved ones.
