Block Baby Blanket
Designed by Emma ShepherdThis color-blocked cotton blanket is woven as two panels on one long warp, which are then sewn together selvedge-to-selvedge. Decorative stitches are sewn by hand along the seam for a final touch. This project is designed with a rigid heddle loom in mind, but can just as easily be woven on a multi-shaft loom. Order a kit.
I've used this pattern twice now as a beginning weaver with fabulous results. I made both blankets with Mallo, which produces and unbelievably soft and velvety fabric, especially in the natural colorway. It washes and dries (in a dying machine) beautifully as well, making it perfect for baby gifts. When I warped my loom I was just shy of the width at reed length, and so added a few extra warp threads. The blanket is substantial in size, great for bundling up a little one. Weaving both panels went quickly, and I think I might have spent more time twisting the fringe than anything else (I'm glad I got the Ashford fringe twister for that bit). For the second blanket I adapted the pattern for a three color plaid in natural, mist and denim. Both blankets were very enthusiastically received, and I plan on making one for my toddler as well.
Recently acquired a 4 shaft table loom and I am learning to use it. I thought this pattern would be good to start with. I am excited to get started with learning how to read patterns and completing a project. Very pleased to have found Gist Yarn.
I got the pattern to make a blanket for my future first grandson. It was very easy to follow the pattern and the blanket came out beautiful!
I wove two of these, one in blue and one in pink. The project was straightforward and enjoyable - mindful weaving. :)
They both washed up nicely and are soft and very pretty. I added some stripes, irregularly on both blankets.
